Her Story When people ask us, so how did the both of you started? Were you both from the same Junior College? Classmates? Thinking back, it seems to me that our affinity had only began yesterday. Apparently, he came from a faraway village in the west of Singapore 'Taman Jurong', while I had been staying close to the north-central area (Ang Mo Kio + Yishun + Woodlands) since the day I was born. So.. how did we meet? I guess I would have to thank my JC Economics tutor Mrs Catherine Ang and classmate Kay, for giving me the opportunity to attend the Youth Forum 8 years ago. I was selected by Mrs Ang to replace Kay by representing my college, AJC in attending the 5-day seminar. Being a nerdy school kid back in those days, I had anticipated 5 long days of boring talks, trips, reflections and blah blah with 2 other 'comrades' from AJC (Rebecca, Wei Lun ). I could never imagined that I would have met my other half ' Wei Siang, on that unforgettable day, 28 Nov 1998. The organizers had made such an arrangement that the both the boys and girls from AJC and JJC would be grouped to 'camp' together during the entire seminar. I had my chance to hang out with the gang from JJC, and was surprised that Wei Siang and I have been placed under the same group for all discussions and activities. We sat together on field trips to social homes (Mendaki home, Commonwealth social corner); had fun gossiping with one another on fellow teammates from other countries; ate ice-kachang together on lunch sessions in Bedok South; long chat at the Paris Beach (when we were locked out from our rooms after 1 particular field trip). I had only known him for less then 72 hours then, yet I never felt so comfortable and relaxed with his presence. I guess that was the time we actually felt something for each another, but was too shy to express ourselves as we had just met. That's Wei Siang with the guys! That's me among the girls from JJC and AJC! We looked so young then! After the Youth Forum, we waited for each other for a week to see if who will take the 1st response. I tried to take the initiative by paging him a general message (rem:alphanumeric paging) and waiting to see how he would respond. Finally, he called me a week later and we decided to go on our first movie date together at Lido Cineplex (can't remember the movie title, but I know it's starring Robin William). We ended up with 2 more dates (tea and studying sessions at the now defunct MacDonald in Dhoby-Ghaut YMCA) before he decided to make me his partner. Everything happened within a span of 2 weeks. On 16 Dec 1998, he brought me to Little Guilin at Bukit Gombak after asking me if I preferred viewing a picturesque scenery with 'a lot of stones or greenery'. We sat on a large rock facing the lake when he posted the question with lots of assurance that he would take care of me, study together for exams, and being there for me whenever I needed him. I was touched, yet I was unsure what the future lies ahead for us as I had barely known this guy for less than a month since the 1st time we met.. I guess I did not make the wrong choice afterall. Since that day, we have walked through 1999 - today (8 years) together hand-in-hand without regrets. I accompanied him through the grueous BMT days; we attended each other's convocations in NTU; we walked through both difficult and sweet times together from teenage days till adulthood, and it's time for us to embark on the 2nd chapter of lives together as husband and wife. Looking back, I will always be grateful to Wei Siang for choosing me to be his girl, even though I have been playful and insensitive to his needs during the last 8 years. I am positive our future together will be sweet, unforgettable and memorable. Ending with a short note ~ I like to complain to WeiSiang that I am poor and broke. He would always reply me: No, you are not. You are a rich girl because you have me. I am a blessed, rich man because I have you.
